i had exacctly the same problem, and used the same methods to fix it. i also went to the shoe clinic and let a shoe pick me. i have been running in the same type of shoe for ten years now and i have never looked back. although my shins are sometimes tender they definetly have improved. i highly recommend getting good shoes to compensate for pronation.
good luck with PAT.

Re: That 2.4 kay run...
It depends i also have my final PAT in August, i did mine on testing day and it was run in cornwall park but it can also be run in the car park at the show grounds .
Iwould say that is unlikely at the moment as the circus is using that Car park

Did they not move the run to Mt Smart Stadium (athletics track)??
I think you meet at Gr South Road (Recr. offices) and then they take you there, but not too sure.

Thank you
I got another questions. Do you have to do press ups first or after the run?

Half the run is all in your head, I find the best way is to set your mind to think that your pride and joy has been stolen and your chasing the guy who stole it
. Or your chasing the guy who your wife/girlfriend cheated on you with
Make up your own scenario but it helps me.
Music also helps, are you allowed to listen to music in the 2.4k run?

Yeah I found it quite a bit 'in the mind' so to speak - I've started hitting the gym again recently and am doing 2.7km in 9min50 at the moment - set your mind to it, pick a scenario, and keep going harder each time - it's not as bad as it sounds!

Re: That 2.4 kay run...
re the music question, you will have to check with pt or ro but most areas say no not while your sitting your test, i find listing to pumped up music prior to helps and then have that one song with the right beat in your head helps also

Re: That 2.4 kay run...
Finally! At long last I've nailed the run for the first time, done the push ups, and no worries about the jump and grip test - just have to do it for real now!
10.37 run (allowed 10.50 - but want to do it in under 10.00 on the day), 45 push ups.
Had lot of probs with shin splints early in the year - went to see a physio who took me off running for months - but they put recruiting on hold anyway, so kind of a blessing in disguise really.
Been back running for a couple of months or so, but the key to passing the run, for me, anyway, was losing 12kg. Was 115kg, now 103kg - hoping to be about 90ish. Who knew that losing all that fat would be so helpful lol!
Just had to come on here and mention it:)
Big mind thing there as well - knowing I can now pass it will help knock chunks off the time each time I run.
Doing 1 2.4km per week, 1 speedy 3.8km (will up this to 5km at end of week), 2 regular 8.5km.
Gym stuff as well.
The only question I have now is, when will recruiting (outside CM) start again?!?

Excellent
Excellent, got to agree with your comments, once you hit that time for the 2.4km then its like an emotional barrier has been lifted and you can only improve from there. The big question is recruiting, especially with the Rugby world cup coming to town, will the Police start ramping up soon?
